E-Bikes and E-Scooters

Pacific Rim School District is working in partnership with the RCMP to raise awareness about the safe and legal use of e-bikes, e-scooters, and other small electric devices. As more students are using these devices to travel to and from school, we want to ensure that safety remains our shared priority. School grounds are active, high-traffic environments, and higher-speed electric devices can present increased risks for students and staff.

We also want to be clear that not all electric devices are treated the same under the law. While some e-bikes may be permitted when they meet specific requirements, many other devices—such as certain e-scooters, e-dirt bikes, and mini-motorcycles—are not legally allowable for use in public spaces. On April 5, 2024, the Province of British Columbia launched the E-Scooter Pilot Project (the “Pilot”). According to provincial guidance, electric scooters cannot be ridden on public roads or sidewalks in municipalities not included in the Pilot. Please note that the City of Port Alberni is not listed as one of the participating communities.

Families are asked not to have their children bring these devices to school. When e-bikes or e-scooters are brought to school, our schools address the matter directly with the student and their family as needed. This is also an opportunity to encourage students to choose active and healthy ways of getting to school. Riding a pedal bicycle that meets legal requirements is a great option that supports physical activity, independence, and wellbeing. As always, we remind all students to wear a properly fitted helmet and to ride safely and responsibly.
