French Immersion at École Alberni Elementary and Alberni District Secondary (K-12)

French Immersion is an exciting, enriched second language program available to students residing in the Alberni Valley. Designed for non-French speaking students, the program provides them with the opportunity to become fully bilingual, opening doors to enhanced cognitive skills, academic success, and future career opportunities in a globalized world.

Students are immersed in the French language in a supportive classroom environment where it is used for meaningful communication and instruction across all subject areas. Research shows that bilingualism improves problem-solving skills, enhances creativity, and strengthens critical thinking.

Why Choose French Immersion?

  • Academic Excellence: French Immersion students achieve the same high level of learning in all subjects as students in the English program while also becoming fluent in a second language.
  • Future Opportunities: Bilingual students have increased access to university scholarships, job prospects in Canada and abroad, and international travel/exchange experiences.
  • Cognitive Benefits: Learning a second language strengthens memory, adaptability, and communication skills in both French and English.

How Does the Program Work?

  • Early French Immersion begins in Kindergarten (or Grade 1) and continues through Grade 12.
  • Primary Years (K-2): 100% of instruction is in French.
  • Intermediate Years (Grades 3-7): Formal English instruction begins in Grade 3 (20% of instructional time).
  • Secondary Years (Grades 8-12): French instruction gradually decreases while maintaining core subjects in French. Students can also prepare for official language certification exams (e.g., DELF).

What if Parents Don’t Speak French?

No worries! Parents do not need to speak French. Teachers communicate in English with parents and provide resources to help students succeed. You can support your child by being involved, encouraging them, and celebrating their achievements.
